Release Info:
Amazing Egyptian Jazz! In 1972, drummer Salah Ragab formed the Cairo Jazz Band and recorded a session to commemorate the state visit of US president Nixon. Literally only a handful copies of this LP survive – along with an even rarer 45!
With an irrepressible ethnic groove similar to the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu, the sound sits in between the seductive Jazz of the West and the exotic melodies of the East.
“Egypt Strut” - originally released on a 7” single and pressed in tiny quantities by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture – is Salah’s response to the evergreen ‘Watermelon Man’. Driving drums, Eastern piano and horns and an off-kilter groove make up what can only be a future jazz club classic!
“Neveen” is a piano based, percussion heavy groove that speaks more of the East than the West, conjuring up images of smoky bars and sultry maidens in the Souk of Cairo, shimmying to jazz and drinking something a bit stronger than mint tea. Bold, dynamic and incurably exotic, it’s like something you’ve never heard before – how often do you hear that said these days?
Practically unknown until now, these are the best two tracks from this mythical band, commemorating a unique point in Jazz history!
